Hi! My name is Olivia Daniels. This photo was taken on August 2020. The event was the March on Washington in Washington, DC.
This photo is two very proud Haitian men waving their flag for the world to see. The March on Washington, it seemed like the world was there. So much people were there - swarms! But when I saw these two men waving these flags, I felt so much pride, so much joy, uh... so much love because I am Haitian, and I do remember a time where Haitians couldn't even give blood because they were told that they're contaminated.
Haitians are the first slaves to fight their oppressor and win! But the thing that people don't talk about is when the oppressor comes back and basically tells them that they have to pay for their freedom, or they're all gonna die. And that payment turned out to be 72 billion dollars, basically making sure that, for generations, the Haitian people would be in [dismay?]... that they cannot come back because they have to pay this debt... that they've been paying alone.
It's very sad, and it hurts.
But we are still proud, and we are still standing... SO TALL! And all of us, with so much pride and so proud & happy to be Haitian - no matter what the world says about us - because we know it's not true; we know we're strong! We know that through anything, we- we- we will get it done!
And this photo just gave me that pride.
