Hi. My name is David Flores, and this photo is called Walking Through Bushwick and it was taken June 12th, 2020. It was one of the hottest days of the year, and the city was at the height of the movement.

This photo stuck out to me in many ways. It was symbolic to how sectional protests and organizing had gotten since late May when we lost George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Protests would usually be centralized to higher populated areas like downtown Manhattan or Brooklyn, but as time went on and the message got stronger, our people took it upon themselves to create movements within their own neighborhoods.

This photo had taken place in the middle of a backblock in Bushwick, where a new and young organization called the Bushwick Coalition was leading a march down the streets to spread the energy to their neighbors. In such tumultuous time, it gave me hope to see young men and women, at the ages as young as 18, organizing and leading movements; it told me that the future of our people were willing to fight for what is just.
